Japanese artisanal textiles + Brooklyn design

warashi-ko uses hand-dyed Japanese textiles, that are dyed with hand-cut paper stencils. Each line (whether straight or plaid or curved) is hand-cut by an artisan. This incredible process is over 100 year old and called "chusen", involving highly skilled stencil-making + hand-dyeing works.

warashi-ko works with 3 textile makers, all of which "chusen" technique to hand-dye the textiles.

Todaya is 145 years old shop with thousands of variety of "chusen" textiles. Sankatsu is 123 years old shop, which specializes in high-end summer "yukata" kimono. They use the same drawing that was created over 100 years ago to recreate the stencils. Ahiroya is owned by a contemporary designer Yuki Noguchi. Ahiroya's textiles are all designed by Noguchi, and dyed in the traditional "chusen" technique.

Japanese kimono textiles come in endless variations, and this one is 100% cotton "tsumugi" textile, which used to be a real kimono.

The textile is 100% cotton "tsumugi" with "ryo-komochi shima" pattern.

Ryo-komochi shima: Because the stripe (shima) is made out of a thick line and two thin lines on both sides, it's called "ryo-komochi" or having kids on both sides.
